The British Army has successfully conducted experiments with a drone swarm in a realistic military environment, representing a major advancement for the UK's ability to deploy autonomous systems on the battlefield. This initiative, known as Phase 1 of the Software Defined Swarms Concept Demonstrator, was delivered by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in collaboration with Army HQ and industry partners.
The demonstrator aims to enhance combat effectiveness and maintain operational advantage for the Army. Dstl brought together expertise from its Land Systems and Autonomy Programme teams to deliver the UK's first high technology readiness, collective control swarming drone demonstrations. Two industry-led options, one by BlueBear (a SAAB Company) and another by the Disruptor Group, were tested in operational environments to assess their ability to complete battlefield tasks.
The resulting Swarm Capability Test Bed (CTB) is now with British Army operators and is a focus for live flying by the Army’s Experimentation and Trials Group (ETG). The Army has already completed 8 weeks of experimentation with the Swarm CTB, which consists of 8 uncrewed aerial vehicles. Brigadier Kieran Sheldon, Head Military Capability Plans, Directorate Capability and Force Design, Army Headquarters, stated that the partnership with Dstl has enabled the Army to conduct extensive in-field trials since May.
