Four studies produced by ORE Catapult, the UK's innovation centre for offshore renewable energy, were presented on 12 August at the British Ambassador's Residence in Santiago. The studies offer recommendations to support the development of offshore wind energy in Chile.
The event, opened by British Ambassador to Chile David Concar, included a presentation of the main findings and a panel discussion titled "Next Steps for Offshore Wind in Chile". Panellists included representatives from the Ministry of Energy and InvestChile.
The findings indicate that Chile possesses exceptional conditions for a competitive offshore wind industry. Key actions identified to realise this potential include strengthening regulatory and permitting frameworks, enhancing coordination among public institutions, and ensuring timely planning of electricity transmission infrastructure. The research also highlights the importance of an integrated approach to sector development, aligning energy, port, and spatial planning with a long-term strategy.
The reports suggest significant opportunities for regional economic growth, particularly in revitalising strategic ports, attracting new industrial investment, and creating highly skilled jobs in industrial regions such as Biobío. The recommendations are informed by the United Kingdom's experience, site visits, and consultations with stakeholders from both countries.
