Brockwell Lido, a beloved South London institution, has been officially recognised as the UK's premier outdoor swimming spot, according to the AA motoring association's latest 'Lido League'. The annual study meticulously evaluated 160 outdoor pools and lidos across the nation, considering a range of factors from online popularity and review scores to social media engagement, entry fees, parking costs, and regional sunshine and temperature data for July.
The Art Deco Grade II-listed lido, nestled within Herne Hill's Brockwell Park, emerged as the clear winner. Judges highlighted its consistently strong reviews, vibrant social media presence, and its enduring appeal that spans all seasons. Opened in 1937, the 50-metre outdoor pool has long served as a community hub, offering not only swimming facilities but also health and fitness amenities within its main building. Recent refurbishments to the indoor gym, following a period where the lido briefly operated under third-party management, have further enhanced its offering, which also includes poolside dining from local eatery Four Hundred Rabbits.
Securing the second spot on the AA's prestigious list was Stoney Cove, a 13-acre open water swimming lake located in Leicestershire. This expansive site was commended for its comprehensive diving facilities, diverse watersports opportunities, and robust safety protocols, including the presence of rescue boats and trained first aiders. While perhaps less suited for young families seeking shallow paddling areas, Stoney Cove stands out as an ideal destination for experienced swimmers and diving enthusiasts.
London continued to dominate the top rankings, with two more of its iconic lidos claiming third and fourth positions. Tooting Bec Lido, celebrated as the UK's largest man-made freshwater pool and one of the oldest, impressed with its impressive 91-metre length, catering to both serious competitive swimmers and those simply seeking a leisurely dip. Following closely, London Fields Lido, with its 50-metre heated pool, earned praise for its year-round accessibility and varied session offerings, including dedicated lane swims, female-only sessions, and family-friendly times, alongside swimming lessons.
The top five was rounded out by Clevedon Marine Lake in Somerset. This serene location was lauded for its tranquil atmosphere, picturesque natural estuary surroundings, and exemplary maintenance standards. The lake offers open access for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and model boating, benefiting from the absence of official opening times, allowing visitors to enjoy its waters at any point throughout the day.
