Broken Lizard brought the house down – literally – when they burst onto the stage at the Summer Of '99 And Beyond Festival in Tinley Park, Illinois, on Saturday, 18 July. The comedy troupe, dressed to the nines as their beloved Vermont state trooper characters from the 'Super Troopers' franchise, stormed Limp Bizkit's set with a mock "noise complaint" that left the audience in stitches.
Feigning shutting down the show due to excessive volume, Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske gave it their all, reprising their iconic roles with aplomb. But, just when some fans in the crowd were unsure if this was for real, one of the troupe members dropped a string of hilarious expletives that left no doubt about the comedic intent.
The 'noise complaint' may have been abandoned, but the fun wasn't over yet! Broken Lizard joined forces with Limp Bizkit on stage for an epic rendition of their hit single 'Break Stuff', bringing the whole shebang to a close in spectacular style. It was just one of many memorable moments from this high-profile cameo – and part of a wider promotional push for 'Super Troopers 3'.
This summer blockbuster reunites the original cast members as the quirky Vermont officers, first introduced in the cult classic back in 2001. With a follow-up to last year's sequel, 'Super Troopers 2', and returning cast members Brian Cox and Marisa Coughlan on board, it promises to be a wild ride.
The Summer Of '99 And Beyond Festival itself was a nostalgic haven for fans of the late 1990s and early 2000s rock scene. With Cypress Hill, Bush, Puddle Of Mudd, Hoobastank, and Creed taking centre stage – including a headlining set from the latter on Sunday, 19 July – it's no wonder Limp Bizkit have been bringing their A-game.
Speaking of which, their recent resurgence has seen them headline Download Festival last month, where they paid tribute to late bassist Sam Rivers. Guitarist Wes Borland reckons they're "the biggest we've ever been right now" – and it's all down to the band's renewed camaraderie and love of performing.
