England batsman Harry Brook's recent innings of 91 runs from 93 balls against Pakistan on day two of the first Test at Headingley has been highlighted as a pivotal moment in his career. Jonathan Agnew, speaking to BBC Sport, suggested this performance should serve as Brook's batting blueprint for his future in Test cricket.
Agnew noted the absence of the 'wild swipes' seen in previous innings, particularly during England's Ashes defeat last winter. He observed that Brook maintained concentration and hit 'bad balls for four' after being dropped on one.
Brook was reportedly considered for the Test captaincy by managing director Rob Key and others at the England and Wales Cricket Board. However, he was ultimately overlooked, with Joe Root taking on the role. Agnew stated he did not believe Brook was ready for the Test captaincy, citing maturity as a factor.
Despite this, Agnew ranks Brook's talent alongside former England players Kevin Pietersen and David Gower. He believes Brook could become Test captain when Root eventually leaves the role, especially if he continues to show maturity through his batting.
