Manchester United secured a 5-1 Premier League win against Ipswich at Old Trafford today, with captain Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick and setting up another goal. This performance marks his third hat-trick for United and his first assists of the new season.
The victory saw United score five goals in a Premier League game for the first time in five years. Fernandes, who was recently named PFA Player of the Year, began his campaign to retain the award by demonstrating his scoring ability, having previously been known for his record 21 Premier League assists last season.
Despite the eventual scoreline, Ipswich initially led the game after Abdul Fatawu scored. However, Fernandes equalised with a shot after Marcelino Nunez slipped, then converted a penalty after Matheus Cunha was fouled. His third goal came from a misdirected shot by Bryan Mbeumo, which he redirected into the net. Fernandes also provided an assist for Mbeumo's lob, which went in off the underside of the bar. Harry Maguire's drilled shot, which was deflected for an own goal, accounted for United's other goal.
United's manager Michael Carrick's team registered 33 shots in the match. Ipswich added a late second goal through Chuba Akpom amidst torrential rain in the closing stages.
