Global K-pop phenomenon BTS returned to London this week, marking their highly anticipated comeback with the first of a two-night residency at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The acclaimed group, whose last performance in the capital was in 2019, engaged a fervent audience, referencing England's recent World Cup knockout victory over Mexico.
Towards the climax of their two-and-a-half-hour spectacle, band leader RM addressed the packed stadium, congratulating England on their 3-2 win. The 31-year-old artist playfully suggested the band's presence brought good fortune, stating, "We always bring the luck to every place. When we were in Belgium, Belgium won, and now in London, England won. You see?" This light-hearted claim was met with enthusiastic cheers from the dedicated 'Army' – the band's legion of fans.
This "Arirang" tour, named after a beloved Korean folk tune, signifies the end of a nearly four-year hiatus for the seven-member boyband, largely due to the members fulfilling their country's compulsory military service. RM reflected on the journey, adding, "(Being here) gives me a lot of reminiscing. There was Covid, there was military, and now we’re here in 2026 together. I missed you so much." Groupmate V also expressed his affection for London, stating, “London is the place I like the most. You always go above my expectations. It’s always exciting to perform in front of you, and the Army gives me chills down my spine.”
The concert itself was an elaborate production, staged on an innovative "360" in-the-round set featuring multi-directional spoke-like runways. The central pavilion drew inspiration from Seoul's Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, with the stage floor incorporating visual elements inspired by the South Korean flag. The show opened with 'Hooligan' from their new, fifth album, followed by the visually striking 'Swim', featuring fabric 'waves' created by 50 dancers around a pool-like stage.
Fans were also treated to new track 'Body To Body', which samples 'Arirang' and included a BTS-ified traditional 'ganggangsullae' circle dance. However, a major highlight came at the end of act two with the anthemic 'Idol', a 2018 track that culminated in an exuberant parade around the perimeter led by BTS, flanked by dancers carrying massive flags and LED ribbons, creating a celebratory atmosphere for their emphatic return.
