Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to hold his first in-person meeting with Donald Trump next week at the UN General Assembly in New York. British officials reportedly increased preparations for a face-to-face meeting last month after the Prime Minister indicated his intention to attend the assembly.
This trip marks Mr Burnham's inaugural appearance as Prime Minister at the UN General Assembly and is considered one of his most significant foreign policy engagements since taking office. He has previously spoken to the US President by phone at least twice, discussing issues concerning Ukraine and the Middle East, including efforts for a ceasefire in Ukraine and the economy during their most recent call.
Ukraine is anticipated to be a primary focus during Mr Burnham's visit. During a trip to Kyiv last month, he highlighted the urgent need for enhanced air defence support for Ukraine and urged allies to provide more Patriot missiles. Mr Burnham also stated his intention to use his attendance at the general assembly to garner increased international support for Ukraine.
Downing Street has confirmed Mr Burnham's attendance at the general assembly but has not confirmed any bilateral meetings, citing the assembly's fast-paced nature. The Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, will accompany Mr Burnham, with Gaza and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan also expected to be part of their agenda.
