Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government is reportedly resisting amendments that would introduce a political donations cap, a measure Mr Burnham previously supported. On the campaign trail in Makerfield, he told a democracy activist he favoured a cap of around £500,000, with a view to reducing it over time.
Labour MPs Stella Creasy and Anneliese Dodds have tabled amendments to the representation of the people bill. Ms Creasy's proposals include a starting cap of £500,000, allowing parliament to adjust the level, and explicitly excluding trade union political funds. Ms Dodds has questioned why ministers would retain increased election spending limits if they believe big money in politics is a risk.
These amendments are scheduled for a report stage vote next week. Ministers are instead reportedly focusing on rules governing the origin and flow of political money. The Rycroft review this year urged parliament to consider spending limits to restore confidence in the political process and keep big money out of UK politics.
