Burnley salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor on Sunday, a result that spared them the ignominy of finishing bottom of the Premier League table. The Clarets, who needed at least a point to avoid ending the season in last place, fell behind early when Matheus Cunha slotted home for Wolves in the 12th minute. However, Burnley rallied and equalised through a well-taken strike from Lyle Foster in the 35th minute, ensuring the points were shared.
Had Burnley lost, they would have finished rock bottom, but the draw lifts them above Sheffield United on goal difference. The Blades, who lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur, now occupy 20th place. Burnley end the season in 19th with 27 points, three points adrift of safety, while Wolves finish 14th with 46 points. "The lads showed real character to come back," said Burnley manager Vincent Kompany. "We wanted to finish on a positive note, and we did that."
The result caps a difficult season for Burnley, who were promoted as Championship winners last term but struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Injuries to key players, including Josh Cullen and Jordan Beyer, hampered their campaign, and they managed only five league wins all season. Wolves, meanwhile, enjoyed a mid-table finish under Gary O'Neil, who took over in August after Julen Lopetegui's departure.
For Burnley, the focus now shifts to rebuilding for a Championship promotion push. The club is expected to be active in the summer transfer window, with several players linked with moves away, including goalkeeper James Trafford. Wolves will look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, with potential departures including Pedro Neto, who has attracted interest from top-six clubs.
