A private jet crash on a Texas motorway saw courageous bystanders and emergency personnel smash the aircraft's windows to rescue trapped passengers. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the death of one individual, while five others on board sustained injuries and are now in a stable condition in hospital.
Video footage from the scene shows individuals using what appeared to be a shovel and a sledgehammer to create an escape route through the plane's windows. This rapid intervention was crucial as the aircraft was engulfed in thick smoke and flames following its impact with the road surface.
The jet, which was travelling from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, had reportedly alerted Laredo airport to significant mechanical issues prior to the crash. The incident took place near Laredo airport, approximately 240 kilometres southwest of San Antonio, and led to the immediate closure of the major motorway, Loop 20, for investigation.
In addition to the casualties on board, one vehicle on the motorway was struck by the crashing aircraft. Details regarding which part of the plane impacted the vehicle remain unclear. Five first responders who attended the scene were later treated for smoke inhalation, highlighting the hazardous conditions they faced.
Police have confirmed that the individual who died has not yet been identified. The ongoing investigation, which includes the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), is expected to keep the motorway closed to traffic for an extended period as authorities work to determine the precise cause of the crash.
