The residents of Nethy Bridge in the Cairngorms National Park have been evacuated as a major wildfire spreads rapidly towards their village, prompting Police Scotland to declare a major incident. The blaze, now in its tenth day, has seen its spread accelerated by a significant change in wind direction and strength.
All roads leading into Nethy Bridge are closed, with residents being directed to a respite centre at the Macdonald Aviemore Hotel. Over 100 firefighters, supported by specialist units and drone technology, are battling the flames, which have been contained by firebreaks but continue to pose a threat.
Police Scotland Superintendent Judy Hill explained that the changing weather conditions have made the situation increasingly complex, with evidence suggesting the fire is spreading towards Nethy Bridge. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has described the blaze as "dynamic and unpredictable," noting its ability to flare up in areas where firebreaks are being maintained.
Smoke from the wildfire is now visible from Aberdeen, 59 miles away, due to the shift in wind patterns. First Minister John Swinney has expressed concern over the situation, acknowledging that resources are under "significant pressure" as a result of climate change-driven weather challenges.
