Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton, the candidates vying to become California's next governor, engaged in a debate on Wednesday. The discussion, held in Burbank, California, focused on key issues including taxes, immigration, and the regulation of artificial intelligence.
Hilton, a former Fox News host endorsed by Donald Trump, criticised Becerra for allegedly not actively campaigning. Becerra, a former congressman and US health and human services secretary, highlighted his experience and pledged to address the state's cost of living crisis, while also positioning himself as a counter to Trump administration policies.
Both candidates stated their opposition to the proposed 'billionaire tax' ballot measure, which would introduce a one-time 5% tax on California residents with over $1 billion. However, they disagreed on Proposition 39, a measure requiring government-issued ID for in-person voting, with Becerra opposing it and Hilton expressing support.
The debate, the only scheduled face-to-face encounter before the 3 November general election, occurred just days before voters are due to begin receiving their ballots by mail.
