California introduces new laws to protect workers from AI threats

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed new laws aimed at safeguarding workers from potential job losses and workplace surveillance due to artificial intelligence.

  • New laws in California prohibit employers from using AI to predict a worker's emotional state via biometric data.
  • Employers must now provide written notices to workers if AI is responsible for mass layoffs.
  • The legislation also bans employers from relying on AI for decisions to fire employees.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed new laws on Wednesday designed to protect workers from the risks associated with artificial intelligence, including potential job losses and workplace surveillance.

The legislation includes a ban on employers using AI to predict a worker's emotional state through biometric data. Employers are now required to issue written notices to staff if AI is the cause of mass layoffs. Additionally, the new laws prevent employers from using AI as the sole basis for termination decisions.

Governor Newsom stated, "AI should expand opportunity – not come at the expense of workers and families." He added that California is prioritising people as the technology reshapes the workplace.
