Cambridge Graduate Mary Coleman's Journey to England Rugby League

Mary Coleman, a Cambridge University graduate and Home Office employee, has achieved an England cap in rugby league despite not playing the sport until her early 20s.

  • Mary Coleman has a first-class degree in psychological and behavioural sciences from Cambridge University.
  • She began playing rugby union in sixth form and rugby league in her early 20s after moving north for work.
  • Coleman, a prop for Wigan, earned her first England cap after winning the treble with the club last season.

Mary Coleman, a prop for Wigan and an England international, had not heard of rugby league until her early 20s. Originally from Kent, Coleman holds a first-class degree in psychological and behavioural sciences from Cambridge University and works for the Home Office.

Coleman's introduction to rugby began in sixth form with rugby union. She continued playing union at Cambridge, where she was reportedly the only freshman with prior rugby experience when she joined the women's team.

Her transition to rugby league was swift after a coach in Preston asked her to play for Wigan. Within four years, she earned her first England cap, having won the treble with Wigan last season. Wigan also retained the Challenge Cup this year and is currently top of the Super League.

Coleman, 28, notes that the growth of women's rugby means it would likely be harder for someone to achieve what she has now, compared to when she started. She highlights the increased investment in support at Wigan, including medical assistance and facilities, though she is not paid to play.
