A Cambridge-based medical technology firm has been awarded €400,000 in European Union innovation funding to accelerate the development of a handheld diagnostic device that could revolutionise early disease detection. Cambridge Raman Imaging, a spin-out from the University of Cambridge, received the grant from the European Innovation Council's Pathfinder programme.
The company specialises in Raman spectroscopy, a laser-based technique that analyses the molecular composition of biological tissues. Unlike traditional biopsies, the method is non-invasive and can detect cellular changes indicative of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and other conditions in real time. The grant will support the miniaturisation of the technology into a portable device suitable for GP surgeries and hospital wards.
Dr Helena Forsyth, the firm's chief executive, said the funding would enable the team to refine the device's sensitivity and begin clinical validation studies. 'This grant recognises the potential of our technology to shift diagnostics from reactive to proactive,' she said. 'We aim to have a working prototype within 18 months.'
The award comes as the UK government continues to negotiate its association to Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship research programme. While UK-based organisations remain eligible for certain EU innovation grants under existing transitional arrangements, the long-term funding landscape remains uncertain. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said it welcomed the grant as evidence of continued collaboration between UK innovators and European research networks.
For UK investors and pension holders, the development underscores the growth potential of the UK's medtech sector, which has attracted increasing venture capital interest. However, exposure to early-stage medical technology companies remains concentrated in specialist funds and AIM-listed stocks, which carry higher risk than blue-chip pharmaceuticals. Analysts at Edison Group noted that while the grant is modest in size, it validates the underlying science and could pave the way for larger commercial partnerships.
