Canada's historic 6-0 win over Qatar at the World Cup was marked by a heart-wrenching moment in the second half, as midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a gruesome broken leg. The 24-year-old Sassuolo player was caught late by Qatar's Assim Madibo as he challenged for possession, leaving him in agony on the pitch.
Kone's reaction and that of his team-mates were a testament to the close bond within the Canadian squad, with players rushing to his aid as the referee halted play. Madibo was sent off for the tackle, leaving Qatar to finish the match with nine men.
Despite the traumatic moment, Canada regrouped and scored three further goals, with the crowd and players united in their determination to secure a historic win. 'It is a statement about Ismael, but also this is an incredible team,' said Canada boss Jesse Marsch.
Marsch confirmed that Madibo had apologised to Kone for his challenge, but insisted that the tackle had no ill-meaning. 'He came into the dressing room to apologise,' Marsch said. 'I don't think he meant such a gruesome tackle, I don't fault him for that but I don't understand their reaction from their bench.'
With the win, Canada are almost certain of a place in the last 32, and will face Switzerland in their next match, knowing a win will ensure top spot in their group. Marsch praised the resilience of his team, saying, 'You can see the brotherhood. It is one of the first things I noticed when I took on this role, how close they are and how connected they are.'
