Canada's international midfielder, Ismael Koné, has shared a message of thanks to his teammates and supporters after undergoing surgery for a broken leg. The 24-year-old sustained the significant injury during Canada's decisive 6-0 victory over Qatar in a World Cup fixture on Thursday.
The incident occurred when Koné, formerly with Watford and now a Sassuolo player, was involved in a late challenge for possession with Qatar's Assim Madibo. The severity of the impact was immediately apparent, with players from both sides visibly concerned as Koné received lengthy medical attention on the pitch. Despite the obvious pain, he was able to acknowledge the crowd with a wave as he was eventually stretchered off.
Canada Soccer has confirmed that Koné will be absent for the remainder of the current tournament. However, the organisation also conveyed positive news regarding his prognosis, stating that he is anticipated to make a complete recovery from the injury. This will be a relief to fans and the national team alike, given his role in the squad.
Taking to Instagram, Koné personally conveyed his deep appreciation for the support he has received. He wrote, "Your love and support has been felt, honestly thank you so much. You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers." He further added, "I wanted you to know that I love you guys from the bottom of my heart and our brotherhood is everything to me. What you guys did yesterday will stay with me forever. I'll be back very soon and we'll keep making more memories together."
The injury is a significant blow for the World Cup co-hosts as they continue their campaign. Canada's final Group B match is scheduled against Switzerland on 24 June, with kick-off at 20:00 BST. Koné's absence will undoubtedly be felt as the team progresses through the competition.
