Tourism from Canada to the United States has been impacted across the country due to the Trump administration's ongoing trade dispute with Canada. In Florida, Canadian tourism saw a decline of more than four percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2025. For the first six months of 2026, Canadian tourism to Florida was down nearly 14 percent, according to Visit Florida.
The decline follows months of antagonism from the Trump administration towards Canada, a traditional US ally and major trading partner. The White House has imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian products, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. This has further strained a relationship already under pressure from the president's repeated suggestions that Canada could become the 51st state.
Researchers at the University of Toronto, analysing cell phone data, found that Canadian visits to US metro areas have fallen by about 42 percent since the Trump administration took office. Six of the ten cities experiencing the largest decline in Canadian visitors were in Florida, with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, topping the list. Overall, border crossings into the US from Canada were down by more than a quarter in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the Canadian government.
Major tourist destinations have felt the impact. Las Vegas saw an approximately 18 percent decrease in visits from Canada in 2025, leading city tourism officials to undertake a sales mission in Western Canada this August. In New York, Canadian tourism was down 26 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, with spending from these tourists down 14 percent from pre-pandemic levels. Vijay Dandapani, president and CEO of the Hotel Association of New York City, stated that the tourism economy cannot afford another year of trade wars with Canada.
