Cancer survivor campaigns for wider NHS fertility preservation

A 23-year-old cancer survivor is campaigning for more readily available NHS egg preservation for those who have completed treatment, after facing a significant personal cost for her own fertility treatment.

  • Erin Lavery, 23, is campaigning for wider NHS egg preservation for cancer survivors.
  • She was unable to preserve her eggs before starting cancer treatment at 21 due to a delayed diagnosis.
  • Ms Lavery now faces an £8,000 cost for post-cancer fertility treatment, which she states the NHS would have funded before her cancer treatment.

Erin Lavery, a 23-year-old cancer survivor from Cambuslang, is campaigning for NHS egg preservation to be more readily available for individuals who have completed cancer treatment. Ms Lavery, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma at 21, was unable to preserve her eggs before starting treatment due to a lengthy diagnosis process.

After completing her cancer treatment, tests confirmed Ms Lavery's fertility had been significantly affected. She now faces an £8,000 bill for post-cancer fertility treatment, which she states the NHS would have funded had she been able to undergo the procedure before her cancer treatment.

The Scottish government has expressed sympathy for Ms Lavery's campaign and plans to outline a review of fertility services. Public Health Minister Maree Todd acknowledged Ms Lavery's advocacy and noted that guidance on fertility preservation suggests health boards should consider cases individually.
