Car insurance premiums have seen a slight increase, with the average annual cost now £566, which is £2 higher than a year ago. However, a survey conducted in April 2026 found that many drivers are successfully negotiating better prices.
The survey revealed that two thirds of policyholders who contacted their car insurer to discuss their premium were offered a reduced price. For those paying annually, the average saving was £60. Customers paying in instalments saved an average of £21 per month.
While some price reductions involved adjusting policy details, such as increasing the excess or removing breakdown cover, 58% of customers who received a lower premium did so without needing to alter their policy. The survey, which included 2,000 UK adults with car insurance, indicated that nearly two thirds of customers found the process of discussing costs with their insurer easy.
