The wait is finally over for fans of the Castlevania series – October 2026 can't come soon enough! Konami's long-dormant franchise is being resurrected in style with the release of 'Castlevania: Belmont's Curse', a game that promises to blend the nostalgia of classic 2D side-scrolling action with modern gameplay mechanics. It's been over a decade since we last saw a major console release from the series, but this new instalment is poised to captivate both old and new fans alike.
Set 23 years after the events of 'Castlevania 3', which first hit shelves back in 1989, 'Belmont's Curse' whisks players away to a demon-infested Paris in 1499. Players will assume the role of Rose Belmont, daughter of the legendary Trevor Belmont, as she battles her way through hordes of hellish creatures to cleanse the city of an ancient evil. This is no easy task – Konami has partnered with external studio Evil Empire, creators of the critically acclaimed 'Dead Cells', to bring this new chapter in the Castlevania saga to life.
According to Tsutomu Taniguchi, producer at Konami, the pressure was on to get this one right. However, when Evil Empire came knocking with a proposal for Castlevania-themed downloadable content for 'Dead Cells', it presented the perfect opportunity to revive the main franchise. Bérenger Dupré, Marketing Director at Evil Empire, highlighted the delicate balance between old and new that they've struck in refining the iconic whip, making it a versatile tool for both movement and combat.
The gameplay mechanics in 'Belmont's Curse' are designed with accessibility in mind – no more frustrating deaths and restarts. Players earn experience points by defeating enemies, which directly boosts their attack and defence stats. This encourages continuous improvement, making each attempt at a boss battle a little less daunting. And when you do manage to defeat those pesky bosses, their essences can be sealed into tarot cards, transforming into powerful arcana spells that can be upgraded through specific challenges – adding an exciting strategic layer to combat.
One of the most intriguing revelations from early previews is the inclusion of historical figures as adversaries. Imagine battling mythical creatures in the Parisian catacombs only to ascend to the city's rooftops and face off against Joan of Arc herself! This creative decision by Evil Empire weaves elements deeply linked with Paris into the narrative, promising a unique blend of historical fantasy and classic Castlevania lore.
