The chance discovery that catapulted Catherine Zeta-Jones to international stardom is one for the record books – a true masterstroke of serendipity. It all began when producer Pip Burley stumbled upon the future Oscar winner in the reception area of Yorkshire Television's Bloomsbury offices, where she was unexpectedly on hand to audition for a light entertainment show.
Burley, the brains behind The Darling Buds of May's unforgettable theme tune, revealed how he had been left searching for the perfect Mariette Larkin when he spotted "a beautiful girl" in a bright yellow dress. And it just so happened that Zeta-Jones, then an unknown talent from Swansea, was in the building – but not for an audition, we're told.
Despite being nowhere on the casting director's radar, Burley seized the moment and invited her to come in for a test. The chemistry was palpable as Zeta-Jones effortlessly charmed the room with her unique blend of talent and charm. "I think we've found our Mariette," he declared, sensing that this feisty Welsh lass had the magic touch.
Of course, Burley knew there'd be naysayers questioning Zeta-Jones' suitability for the role – she did have a strong Welsh accent, after all. But in his words, "it kind of didn't matter with her" – and before long, she'd adapted like a pro.
The rest, as they say, is history. The Darling Buds of May went on to become a ratings sensation, catapulting Zeta-Jones into the big leagues and cementing her status as a Hollywood A-lister. And if David Jason's prediction that "she won't be with us for long" was anything to go by, we shouldn't have been surprised. The Darling Buds of May is now available to stream in the UK on ITVX.
Interestingly, Burley also dropped a bombshell about the casting process – revealing that none other than Danny DeVito, Bob Hoskins, and Phil Collins were all considered for the role of Pop Larkin before Jason was ultimately cast. It just goes to show: sometimes it's the unexpected twists that set the ball rolling.
