UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has denounced FIFA President Gianni Infantino's failed attempt to sell stakes in the World Cup, calling it “even worse than the Super League plan”. Ceferin issued a warning that Infantino will face an opponent if he seeks re-election next March.
The FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme, which aimed to sell stakes in the World Cup, was shelved at the beginning of August following widespread opposition. Ceferin, who led UEFA's collective stance against the plan, stated, “I’m absolutely sure that the [FFE] plan is dead. For me, the most important thing is that we stopped another try to sell the sport.”
UEFA, supported by Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation, is pushing for Infantino to resign and has not dropped a threat to boycott FIFA competitions. Talks are also underway with Concacaf to establish a combined Nations League tournament. The six Nordic football associations have also expressed a loss of confidence in the FIFA president and raised concerns about the organisation's governance.
Ceferin believes Infantino's path to survival is narrowing, noting they have not been in contact since the FFE scandal emerged. While Ceferin has ruled out running for the FIFA presidency himself, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani has been suggested as a potential opponent for Infantino.
