Celtic FC have begun their Scottish Premiership title defence, but not in the way they had hoped. The champions will face Dundee on 3 August, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30 BST, in a Monday evening fixture.
The reason behind this timing is the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow from 1 to 2 August. The cycling events will take place at the Sir Chris Hoy Arena, adjacent to Celtic Park. Additionally, Calvin Harris will stage two concerts at Hampden on the same weekend.
Celtic have expressed their disappointment over the scheduling, stating that they made 'repeated representations' to the SPFL and Police Scotland to ensure a weekend fixture. However, they were told there was 'no choice' but to have their opener on a Monday evening.
The champions have negotiated an earlier kick-off time to help fans travelling from Ireland. All six opening-weekend fixtures will be shown live on television, with the 2026-27 term starting on Friday, 31 July as Dundee United host Rangers.
The first Old Firm derby will take place on Sunday, 20 September at Celtic Park, and the Dundee derby will be held at Dens Park during the third round of fixtures.
Last season was a dramatic one for Celtic, as they clinched a fifth straight title with a late win against Hearts.
