Veteran winger Josh Charnley etched his name into the Super League record books on Saturday, becoming the competition's all-time leading try-scorer during Leigh Leopards' impressive 38-12 triumph over Bradford Bulls. The 34-year-old's hat-trick at Odsal propelled him to 272 career tries, surpassing the previous record of 271 held by Leeds Rhinos winger Ryan Hall.
Charnley's record-breaking performance was the highlight of a comprehensive victory for the Leopards. His first try, set up by an inch-perfect kick from Adam Cook, brought him level with Hall. He then claimed the record outright with a superb individual effort, receiving the ball on the right touchline, sidestepping two defenders, and diving over. He completed his hat-trick, and his 16th try of the current season, from a pass by Cook, further cementing his place in Super League lore.
Despite a brief rally from Bradford in the second half with tries from Chris Atkin and Caleb Aekins, Leigh maintained control. Innes Senior, Bailey Hodgson, and Louis Brogan also crossed the whitewash for the Leopards, adding gloss to the scoreline. Adam Cook was instrumental with seven successful conversions and an early penalty goal, contributing significantly to Leigh's points tally.
The victory marks Leigh's sixth win in their last seven matches, demonstrating a strong run of form. This result sees them remain in seventh position in the Betfred Super League standings, but crucially, they have closed the gap to just two points behind St Helens, who currently occupy the final play-off spot. For Bradford, the defeat keeps them in 10th place at the halfway point of their campaign, highlighting the challenge they face in the division.
A minor concern for Leigh was the sight of Charnley limping off with 15 minutes remaining. Fans and the club will be hoping the injury is not serious, allowing their record-breaking winger to continue adding to his impressive tally as the season progresses. Charnley's tries have been scored across spells with Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, and now Leigh since his debut in 2010, underscoring his enduring impact on the sport.
Looking ahead, a unique fixture between these two sides is already planned for next year, with the corresponding match scheduled to take place in Las Vegas on 27 February at Allegiant Stadium. This will be a groundbreaking event, marking the first time two teams from either side of the Pennines will compete Stateside, bringing Super League rugby to an international audience.
