OpenAI's ChatGPT is the most used AI tool by the US House of Representatives, based on financial expenditure. House disbursement records for the year ending March 31 indicate that OpenAI received approximately 90% of all spending on AI tools by House offices, committees, and institutional accounts.
Congress spent around $100,580 on ChatGPT across 798 transactions, from a total of at least $113,740 in AI spending. Anthropic's Claude was the second most purchased tool, with $13,160 spent across 37 transactions.
Democratic offices accounted for $54,165 in AI purchases, which is three times the $15,782 spent by Republican offices. Congressional staffers are reportedly using these AI tools to draft memos, summarise legislation, respond to constituents, and prepare hearing materials.
