Malawi's national women's football team, the Scorchers, have reached the final of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) after a 3-1 semi-final win against Algeria in Rabat. Sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga were instrumental, contributing three goals to the victory.
Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with an acrobatic overhead kick, followed by Temwa Chawinga extending the lead in first-half added time. Although Algeria's Ikram Adjabi scored in the second half, Tabitha Chawinga secured Malawi's win with her second goal.
The match saw two first-half red cards, with Algeria's Morgane Belkhiter dismissed for denying Tabitha Chawinga a goalscoring opportunity, and Malawi's Rose Kadzere also sent off for a studs-up challenge. Malawi, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament and making their Wafcon debut, had previously defeated Nigeria and Ghana.
Malawi will compete in Sunday's final against either Morocco or Cameroon. Their progression to the final also means they have secured a spot in next year's Fifa Women's World Cup in Brazil.
