Chelsea initially took a commanding 3-0 lead with goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, and Joao Pedro. However, Brighton fought back, reducing the deficit to a single goal through Malick Yalcouye and a Joao Pedro own goal.

Palmer then extended Chelsea's lead to 4-2 with a curling effort in the 75th minute. Brighton's Pascal Gross headed in a consolation goal in the 96th minute after a long throw-in was not dealt with.

New Chelsea signing Emiliano Martinez was tested throughout the match, making saves from Malick Yalcouye and Charalampos Kostoulas. Moises Caicedo's afternoon was cut short after 11 minutes as he left the pitch in tears.
