Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province and China's fourth-largest city, has seen a significant increase in interest from British travellers. Internal data from travel booking platform Trip.com indicates that UK searches for Chengdu rose by 133 per cent year-on-year.
This surge follows China's decision to scrap its visa requirement for UK passport holders in February. The city is known for its blend of traditional and futuristic elements, including its association with pandas and Sichuan cuisine.
Chengdu is home to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which houses over 200 pandas. The facility is involved in conservation efforts and provides habitats for its panda population, including nurseries for cubs.
Beyond its wildlife, Chengdu offers cultural experiences such as chan cha, a traditional tea pouring ritual recognised by Unesco, and Sichuan opera performances featuring bian lian, or face-changing. The city also features modern landmarks like the Tower of Life installation and the Jiaozi Ring Bridge.
