For a staggering six hours – from noon until 7pm – the streets will be abuzz with the hum of checkmates, the whispers of pawns, and the strategic sparks that fly when mere mortals dare challenge the grandmasters.
The 'Challenge the Chess Master' tent is where the magic happens, folks! Here, you'll have the chance to take on the likes of nine-time British champion Michael Adams and three-time champion Gawain Maroroa Jones in simultaneous displays or one-on-one speed games. Don't worry if your chess skills are still finding their feet – our expert tutors from Chess in Schools and Communities will be on hand to guide you through the basics, creating a warm welcome for complete beginners.
But that's not all! The area will be awash with hundreds of chess sets and boards, including giant ones designed to wow your eyes and thrill your senses. Get ready for 'Living Chess', where professional actors bring the game to life on massive boards; test your tactical mettle in 'Puzzle Rush'; or watch the world's elite battle it out in 'giant blitz' games – a gruelling test of both skill and stamina that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. And, as a special nod to the sport's rich history, England's national coaches will be there, scouting for the next big talent, just like they did with Kushal Jakhria in 2021.
This year's ChessFest holds particular significance as it marks the 175th anniversary of the 'Immortal Game', a legendary match that'll leave you breathless. On June 1851, Adolf Anderssen pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in chess history with a string of daring sacrifices – and we're re-enacting this epic encounter as a Living Chess game during the festival!
