Chicken liver sponge shows potential for cleaning polluted harbours

The chicken liver sponge, also known as the kidney sponge (Chondrosia reniformis), has demonstrated a strong ability to survive in polluted harbour environments, according to new research. Scientists transplanted sea sponges into Marina Palamós on Spain’s Costa Brava almost two years ago to study their resilience.

Of the five species tested, the chicken liver sponge was the only one to survive, with nearly 92% of specimens enduring the polluted water. Some even reproduced asexually, increasing their numbers.

Manuel Maldonado, a sponge biologist who led the research, noted the arrival of red starfish in the area last month, suggesting the sponges could help clean up pollution in ports. Sea sponges are known for their ability to filter pollutants and enhance biodiversity.
