New research published in the peer-reviewed journal BMJ Oncology has revealed a concerning increase in cancer rates among young people in England between 2001 and 2019. The study, which analysed cancer incidence across an 18-year period, found a noticeable upward trend in both children aged 0-14 and young adults aged 15-24.
Specifically, the research indicated that leukaemia rates in children saw a 17% increase over the period. For young adults, thyroid cancer rates rose by 4%. These findings contribute to a growing body of evidence globally suggesting a rise in childhood and young adult cancers, prompting experts to consider the potential underlying causes of these shifts.
Professor Paul Pharoah, Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge, commented on the study, noting that while the absolute numbers remain relatively small, the observed trends warrant further investigation. He highlighted the importance of understanding whether these increases are due to improved diagnosis, changes in environmental factors, or lifestyle influences.
The study's methodology involved a comprehensive analysis of cancer registration data for England, providing a robust statistical foundation for its conclusions.
