China-Linked Spyware Targets 13 Countries, Including the US

Security researchers have identified a Chinese-linked spyware, known as LightSpy, that has expanded its target scope to over a dozen countries, including the US and several European nations.

  • LightSpy spyware has been linked to a Chinese company and has expanded its target scope to 13 countries, including the US.
  • The spyware has new functionality capable of stealing troves of data and remotely bricking devices.
  • LightSpy is a modular spyware platform that allows its controller to attack various devices, including smartphones, Apple devices, and Windows PCs.

Security researchers at Arctic Wolf have discovered that the LightSpy spyware, first identified in 2018, has evolved into a commercial spyware platform operated by a single threat actor. The platform features custom branding, billing, and demos for advertising it to prospective customers. LightSpy has been linked to a Chinese contractor after one of the spyware's operators used the LightSpy administrator's panel to place an order with Kentucky Fried Chicken using their real name and office address.

Why this matters: The proliferation of spyware beyond governments and nation-backed hackers highlights the growing threat to individual privacy and security.

What this means for you: Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi and consider using a virtual private network (VPN) to protect your device and data.
