High-profile Chinese businessman Guo Wengui has been handed a 30-year prison sentence in the US for his involvement in a vast fraud and money laundering operation, which saw him allegedly swindle thousands of online followers out of over £760 million. The scheme, described by prosecutors as 'brazen and cynical', preyed on the trust of individuals seeking to bring democracy to China.
Guo's downfall comes after he was found guilty of racketeering, fraud, and money laundering charges, having built a significant fortune as a property developer in China before fleeing to the US in 2017. He had previously maintained strong ties with the Chinese government, but upon arrival in the US, he positioned himself as an opponent of the Communist regime, cultivating a large online following among the Chinese community.
US attorney Sean S Buckley noted that Guo's actions 'exposed the dark underbelly' of his supposed advocacy for democracy in China. "Rather than being satisfied with legitimate opportunities, Guo exploited the trust placed in him for personal gain," he stated. The sentence, said to send a clear message about the consequences of fraud, underscores that fame and wealth do not exempt individuals from accountability.
Prosecutors detailed how Guo solicited over £760 million from his online audience between 2018 and 2023, with funds being diverted into funding an extravagant lifestyle. This included a 50,000 square foot mansion, a Lamborghini valued at over £760,000, and a £28 million yacht.
New York court judge Analisa Torres presided over the sentencing, observing that Guo had 'preyed on those seeking to bring democracy to China', diverting their financial contributions to sustain his own opulent existence. The courtroom was reportedly filled with Guo's supporters during the sentencing hearing.
