Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed director behind cinematic hits such as Oppenheimer and Inception, has announced that fans will need to wait at least three years for his next feature film. The Oscar winner attributed the extended break to the colossal scale and demanding nature of his latest project, The Odyssey, an ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem.
Speaking in a recent interview, Nolan confessed that the production pushed both himself and his entire crew to their physical and creative limits. "I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think," he stated. He added that given the monumental source material, the difficulty was almost a prerequisite: "I mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We are not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult."
The Odyssey, which premiered globally on 17 July 2026, chronicles Odysseus’s arduous ten-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, battling mythical creatures, gods, and other formidable foes, while his wife Penelope fends off persistent suitors and his son Telemachus embarks on a quest to find him. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Other notable appearances include Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Samantha Morton as Circe, and Charlize Theron as Calypso.
Nolan had contemplated adapting the Greek epic for approximately two decades before deciding the timing was right for such an ambitious undertaking. He noted that the technological advancements and his standing in the industry now allowed him to bring such a grand vision to the screen, particularly in a genre that he felt had not been fully explored on a modern cinematic canvas. The film is also a technical landmark, being the first feature film to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, a feat made possible through Nolan's collaboration with IMAX to develop lighter and quieter equipment suitable for dialogue-heavy scenes.
Since its release, The Odyssey has garnered significant critical acclaim, securing a 95 per cent rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. This score makes it Nolan’s highest-ranked film on the platform, surpassing earlier successes like The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and even the indie psychological drama Memento. Its theatrical debut has also been record-breaking, achieving a worldwide opening of $264.1 million, with $124.5 million from the US and Canada alone, marking the biggest global opening of Nolan’s distinguished career.
For UK audiences, The Odyssey is currently screening in cinemas across the country. While a streaming release date has not yet been announced, Nolan's previous films have typically become available on major platforms following their theatrical runs. For instance, viewers can currently stream Oppenheimer on Apple TV+.
