Citizens JMP, a US-based investment bank, has reiterated its 'Outperform' rating on Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) following the technology giant's latest wave of artificial intelligence model releases. The firm maintained its price target, citing the company's continued leadership in AI development and its ability to monetise new capabilities across search, cloud, and advertising.
The reaffirmation comes after Alphabet unveiled updates to its Gemini AI model family, including enhanced reasoning and multimodal features. Analysts at Citizens noted that these releases reinforce Alphabet's competitive position against rivals such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta. They argued that the new models could drive higher engagement and advertising revenue, particularly in the UK and European markets where Google commands a dominant search share.
In London trading on Thursday, the FTSE 100 edged up 0.3% to 8,215 points, with technology and media stocks among the gainers. Alphabet's London-listed shares, traded via depositary receipts, rose approximately 0.8% in early deals. The broader Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index also climbed 0.5%, reflecting a cautiously optimistic tone across the sector.
For UK investors and pension holders, the rating is significant given Alphabet's weight in global index funds and many UK pension portfolios. The tech giant remains a top holding in popular passive funds tracking the S&P 500. However, some analysts caution that regulatory scrutiny in Europe and the UK — including the Digital Markets Act and ongoing Competition and Markets Authority investigations — could temper future upside.
“Alphabet's AI roadmap looks robust, but the regulatory landscape in Europe and the UK remains a headwind that investors cannot ignore,” said a senior equity analyst at a London-based wealth manager, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Still, for long-term growth portfolios, the story remains compelling.”
