Susan Langley, the Lady Mayor of the City of London, has highlighted the UK's opportunity to influence the global discussion on trusted artificial intelligence (AI) as it prepares to host the G20 presidency in 2027. Langley stated that the UK can bring international partners together to help shape this conversation.
This week, Langley will host the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority at the City Regulators’ Dinner. She intends to emphasise that maintaining high standards must be accompanied by a regulatory framework that adapts to advancements in AI, digital assets, and tokenisation.
Langley noted that financial centres thrive by combining robust regulation with an environment that fosters innovation. She added that striking this balance is crucial for the UK to remain competitive as the global financial landscape evolves. The City of London Corporation's Regulating for Growth report, published last year, proposed practical recommendations for more predictable and proportionate regulation.
The UK has made a promising start with initiatives like regulatory sandboxes, which allow businesses to test new technologies in controlled environments. Langley stressed the need for greater international cooperation on AI in financial services, advocating for common principles, stronger regulatory interoperability, and closer collaboration between standard-setting bodies.
