Malc Pearce from Cleethorpes has made history by becoming one of only a few people over 60 to complete the challenging 21-mile English Channel swim solo. The 64-year-old accomplished this feat in an impressive 14 hours and 58 minutes, a remarkable achievement that showcases his dedication and endurance.
Pearce swims with the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Water Rats, an organisation that has stated there are fewer than 50 people over 60 who have managed this feat. Despite the challenges he faced, including pulling his shoulder and swimming through crystal-clear water with jellyfish, Pearce remained determined to complete the swim. He recalled his experience, saying: 'A week later, I'm getting over it, it was rough when I first got in and I pulled my shoulder, which was aching all the way across. But I thought I'm not getting out until I've finished.'
Pearce should have attempted the challenge last year but was thwarted by the weather. However, he is now gearing up to swim the Channel again, this time as part of a relay team from the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Water Rats. With weather permitting, he will swim through the night on Wednesday, demonstrating his continued commitment to this challenging sport.
Pearce's remarkable achievement is a testament to his hard work and dedication. His feat highlights the importance of staying active and pushing personal boundaries, even at an advanced age.
