Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has announced the franchise will comply with the NBA's disciplinary measures for salary cap circumvention, reversing an earlier stance of defiance.
The NBA's sanctions include a $30 million fine against the Clippers, a one-year suspension for Ballmer, and the stripping of five first-round draft picks. Ballmer confirmed the fine has been paid.
In an online statement, Ballmer apologised to fans, team staff, and fellow owners for the "distraction and distress" caused by the inquiry into violations involving Kawhi Leonard. He stated that while disagreements remain regarding the report's findings, the focus should be on supporting the team rather than creating distractions.
The league's inquiry, which lasted nearly a year, investigated whether a $28 million endorsement deal between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC breached salary rules. Ballmer was accused by league officials of knowingly assisting Leonard in securing off-court income deals and failing to ensure team compliance.
