Cloud gaming is altering how players approach game and hardware purchases. Access, portability, and compatibility are now considered alongside graphics performance when making buying decisions.
While cloud gaming broadens how people access games, it does not make consoles irrelevant. Console power, storage, and the ability to play offline still influence purchases.
Services like Xbox Cloud Gaming allow subscribers to stream selected titles across various compatible devices, including consoles, PCs, smart TVs, and mobile devices. Xbox Play Anywhere further illustrates this by enabling participating digital games, saves, add-ons, and achievements to transfer between supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and Windows gaming handhelds without a second purchase.
New hardware also plays a role, with the PlayStation 5 Pro offering enhanced visual quality and performance. The Nintendo Switch 2, released in the UK on June 5, 2025, provides backward compatibility with original Nintendo Switch games, allowing current owners to protect their existing game collections.
Broadband speed is a key consideration for cloud gaming. PlayStation recommends a minimum of 5 Mbps for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p, while Xbox suggests at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection.
