The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) accepted undertakings in lieu of a reference for the anticipated acquisition by Schlumberger Limited of ChampionX Corporation on 15 July 2025. This decision followed a consultation period on the proposed undertakings, which closed on 4 July 2025.
The CMA had previously extended its consideration of these undertakings until 8 August 2025. On 10 April 2025, the authority stated there were reasonable grounds to believe the offered undertakings, or a modified version, might be accepted.
Prior to this, on 27 March 2025, the CMA had indicated that the merger might lead to a substantial lessening of competition within a market or markets in the United Kingdom. It had stated that the merger would be referred for an in-depth, phase 2 investigation unless acceptable undertakings were offered to address these concerns.
