The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a significant market study into the provision of private dental services across the United Kingdom. Initiated on 5 March 2026, the comprehensive review is anticipated to conclude within 12 months, with a final report expected by early March 2027.
This study encompasses all aspects of private dental care, from preventative treatments and clinically necessary procedures to cosmetic enhancements. The CMA's focus aligns with its strategic objectives to enhance household prosperity by fostering competition and safeguarding consumers, particularly in essential spending areas and for vulnerable individuals.
Currently, the CMA is in a critical phase of engagement, evidence gathering, and analysis, which began in March and is set to continue until early September 2026. During this period, the Authority is consulting a wide array of stakeholders. This includes independent dental practices and large dental groups, industry and professional representative bodies, consumer advocacy groups, and both UK and devolved governments, alongside regulatory bodies across all four UK nations.
The evidence collection process is multifaceted, involving responses to the initial statement of scope, commissioning third-party research, and utilising statutory information-gathering powers. The CMA is also conducting informal surveys, hosting industry roundtables, and engaging in direct meetings with providers and associations. Furthermore, it is analysing existing market data and collaborating closely with Chief Dental Officers in each nation to understand the relevant legal and policy frameworks.
Looking ahead, the CMA plans to publish an update on its work and consult publicly on its emerging findings and potential remedies between October and November 2026. This period will allow interested parties to provide feedback on any identified concerns and proposed options for market improvement. The study will culminate in a final report, detailing conclusions and any recommended remedies, which is legally mandated for publication by 4 March 2027.
