A new report has revealed that the cost of a major incident in Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire, has reached almost £1.2m. The incident led to the evacuation of 97 homes and 256 residents across four streets in May.

Clackmannanshire Council has spent or committed £750,412, with an additional £425,000 anticipated. The report, which will be presented to councillors on Thursday, states that £1m has been received from the Scottish government to support the emergency response.

An eight-week investigation by the Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) confirmed that the issue, which caused cracks in roads, paths, and homes, is linked to historical mining work. The council is also seeking to recover eligible costs through the MRA.

Displaced residents, including private owners and Kingdom Housing Association tenants, have been housed in various ways. Twenty households are in council houses, seven in Kingdom Housing Association stock, and eight in Stirling University student accommodation. Residents in student accommodation are expected to receive a longer-term housing offer by the end of the month.
