Colchester school scraps physical contact ban after criticism

Philip Morant School and College in Colchester has reversed its "no physical contact" rule following criticism from parents and an online petition.

  • The school initially introduced the ban due to an increase in overly physical behaviour.
  • The new policy allows handshakes, 'dapping', fist bumps, high fives, holding hands, and hugs under specific conditions.
  • An online petition against the original ban gathered over 350 signatures.

Philip Morant School and College in Colchester has scrapped its "no physical contact" policy for pupils. The school had faced criticism from parents, with some claiming children received detentions for actions such as hugging or high-fiving friends.

Head teacher Stephanie Neill stated that the initial approach was introduced after "an increase in overly physical behaviour last term that disrupted learning and raised safety concerns." An online petition protesting the rule attracted more than 350 signatures.

Following a review, the school published a five-page document outlining appropriate levels of physical contact. This now permits handshakes, 'dapping', fist bumps, and high fives, provided both individuals consent, the contact is not malicious or disrespectful, does not cause lateness, and does not involve "bone squashing" or take place in classrooms. Holding hands, a "tap on the shoulder" for attention, and hugs are also listed as acceptable.
