Sussex have climbed to the top of the County Championship Division One after securing a dominant innings and 98-run victory over Glamorgan at the County Ground in Hove. The win, their fourth in seven matches, was sealed inside three days and largely orchestrated by the exceptional all-round performance of James Coles.
Coles, who had already hit an unbeaten 224 on day two, continued his stellar form with the ball, taking three crucial wickets for 34 runs in Glamorgan's second innings. He was ably supported by captain Tom Haines, who claimed an impressive three wickets for just five runs with his medium pace, and debutant Dom Goodman, who picked up two wickets after being called in as a late replacement.
Glamorgan began day three on 42 without loss, still trailing by 324 runs, with openers Zain-ul-Hassan and Asa Tribe showing initial resilience. Tribe reached his half-century from 98 deliveries, and the hundred partnership arrived in the 35th over. However, Coles made the vital breakthrough just before lunch, trapping ul-Hassan with a sharp reflex catch by Tom Alsop at short-leg. Three overs later, Jack Carson dismissed Tribe, bowled by a sharply spinning delivery, leaving Glamorgan at 109 for 2 at the interval.
The afternoon session saw Glamorgan add 92 runs for the loss of one wicket, with Ben Kellaway contributing 55 before being adjudged leg before wicket to Haines. Despite a rearguard effort that saw them reach 212 for 3 at tea, the post-interval period proved decisive. Colin Ingram edged Haines to Alsop for a pair, followed swiftly by Kiran Carlson being run out for 32. Haines then removed Sean Dickson, caught at second slip, completing a flurry of three wickets in four overs.
A 42-run stand for the seventh wicket provided some temporary respite, but Coles returned to dismiss Chris Cooke leg before. Debutant Goodman then took his first two wickets for Sussex, having Tom van der Gugten and Tom Norton caught behind in the same over. Coles fittingly wrapped up the match by bowling last man Ryan Hadley, securing a comprehensive victory and 23 points for Sussex, while Glamorgan earned two points.
