Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old sophomore safety for Southern Nazarene University (SNU), has died five days after sustaining what the school described as a “traumatic injury” during a game against Ouachita Baptist. The university, based in Bethany, Oklahoma, announced his death on Thursday, 15 October 2026.
Ulrich was injured during a 49-14 loss on Saturday, 10 October 2026. The game was delayed for nearly an hour while he received medical attention on the field before being transported to a hospital. The Division II school has not disclosed the cause of death or the specific nature of Ulrich’s injury.
SNU Athletics shared on X, formerly Twitter, that the loss is “deeply felt across our campus.” SNU coach Dustin Hada also posted a tribute, describing Ulrich as a “Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous.” University president Keith Newman stated that Ulrich died in the hospital “surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates and dear friends.”
Ulrich, from Azle, Texas, was in his third season at SNU, having made 16 starts in 20 games, including six starts this year. He ranked third on the team with 36 tackles. Southern Nazarene University has cancelled its game scheduled for Saturday, 17 October 2026, at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
