Rescue workers in Colombia are urgently searching for survivors trapped in buildings and under rubble after Monday's powerful earthquake. The confirmed death toll stands at over 180, with most fatalities occurring in the cities of Cali and Pereira.
The magnitude 7.4 quake hit at 07:34 local time on Monday and was felt across a vast area of western Colombia. Aftershocks continued to be felt on Tuesday, with Colombia's geological service reporting more than 70 tremors since Monday's main earthquake.
President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a state of emergency. He reported on Tuesday that almost 2,600 people have been injured and nearly 200 are still missing. More than 1,100 homes have been destroyed, and over 8,000 have been damaged.
In Cali, where 95 deaths have been reported, a unified command post is coordinating rescue efforts. Mayor Alejandro Eder stated that 239 people remain trapped and 949 are injured. A curfew has been ordered in Cali from 20:00 local time until 06:00 on Wednesday morning to address looting threats.
International support is being offered, with the UN Secretary-General expressing solidarity. The Donald Trump administration announced a donation of $15.5m (£11.5m) to Colombia. Spain's Foreign Minister reported 164 Spaniards are missing, though there are no reports of injuries or deaths among its citizens.
