Comcast adds motion sensing to newer routers with privacy catch

Comcast has rolled out Wi-Fi Motion, a free opt-in feature for newer Xfinity gateways that detects motion inside homes via Wi-Fi signal interruptions. The feature may share data with third parties without further notice.

  • Wi-Fi Motion is available on Xfinity gateways XB7 and newer models.
  • The feature is opt-in and sends notifications through the Xfinity app.
  • Comcast may disclose Wi-Fi Motion data to third parties without further notice in certain circumstances.

Comcast has introduced a free motion-sensing feature for its latest home routers, allowing customers to receive alerts about activity inside their homes while away. The feature, called Wi-Fi Motion, works by detecting interruptions to the Wi-Fi signal and sends notifications via the Xfinity app.

As first reported by The Verge, Wi-Fi Motion is available on advanced Xfinity gateways XB7 and newer models. It is opt-in, meaning users must switch it on in the Xfinity app. The feature is described as providing “motion detection in their home and for a basic level of security.”

There is a privacy trade-off. According to an Xfinity support page, Comcast may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without further notice in connection with law enforcement investigations, disputes involving Comcast, or court orders and subpoenas. The company says it does not have to inform users of such disclosures.

Why this matters: The feature introduces a new way for consumers to monitor their homes, but the potential for undisclosed data sharing raises privacy considerations.

What this means for you: If you use a newer Xfinity gateway, you can choose whether to enable Wi-Fi Motion, but be aware that data from the feature may be shared with third parties without further notice.
