Community Shield winners rarely go on to win Premier League title

Winning the Community Shield has rarely predicted Premier League success since 1992-93, with only eight of 34 winners also claiming the league title.

  • Only eight of 34 Community Shield winners since 1992-93 have also won the Premier League in the same season.
  • The team losing the Community Shield has won more league titles (10) than the winners (8) since 1992.
  • FA Cup winners have claimed eight of the last 12 Community Shields, a more frequent occurrence than in previous years.

Premier League champions Arsenal are set to face FA Cup winners Manchester City in the Community Shield at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Sunday. However, historical data suggests that lifting the curtain-raiser trophy does not often lead to Premier League glory.

Since the Premier League began in 1992-93, only eight of the 34 Community Shield winners have gone on to secure the league title in the same season. Manchester City in 2019 were the last team to achieve this, with Alex Ferguson's Manchester United doing so in 2011.

In fact, the teams that lost the Community Shield have won more league titles in the same season, with 10 instances compared to the winners' eight. This includes Manchester City's three consecutive league wins between 2021 and 2023 after losing the Shield.

Last year, Crystal Palace beat Liverpool in the Shield but finished 15th in the league, though they did win the Conference League. The previous season's Premier League winners have won the Community Shield 18 out of 34 times, or 53%.
